AirPod Pro 4 hearing test always fails - "adjust both AirPods and check again"

I cannot get my AirPod Pro 4 to execute a hearing test. When I try, I am able to get past the background noise check OK. Then I fail to get past "check fit" test.

Each time time I get the message "Adjust both Airpods and check again. You can improve fit by adjusting the position" or "changing the tip size." I have tried this about 20 times, even tried all the tips. The only way that I can pass the fit test is to press both my palms hard against the AirPods. Crazy. This is the fit that is required by the test?

There seems to be a software error during this fit test. I am frustrated that I am unable to use the hearing aid feature. Too bad there was such a cool advertisement on TV for the dad to hear the daughter sing and play the guitar. False advertising?
