Bluetooth Audio as default over USB-C on iPhone

I am listening to podcast on Airpods through bluetooth when I notice that my phone battery is low and needs charging. When I plug into the USB-C port by head phones shut off and the phone will default to whatever is plugged in. Is there a way to keep the bluetooth as default so that I can continue to listen while its charging? To answer your first question, No I do not have a wireless charger available at work.
