What is the best external hard drive for Imac 24" 2023

I have a 1TB Imac 24" and want to purchase an external hard drive. I am so confused by all of the acronyms to describe different ones. I just need an external hard drive for mostly photos and some files that I want to keep. Does anyone have any recommendations?

the best would likely be a thunderbolt5 SSD external hd


it would be costly and might be overkill for just storing photos on

though ssd as a rule is a bit less prone to dying on you out of the blue because they do not have moving parts like magnetic roration based storage.
