Airpods Pro 2 stop charging once case is closed

Consistently, my left Airpod Pro will register as charging in the widget on my phone however, as soon as I close the Airpod case, it stops charging. I have to open the case, take the airpod out, put it back in, then close the case (almost always having to gingerly do so) to see if it stays charging. More often than not I need to do this multiple times to get it to finally stay connected. I’m unsure if a connector is damaged in the case or something else but it is extremely frustrating and any suggestions would be appreciated. I clean them regularly per Apple’s guides and most of the time this doesn’t solve the issue either.
