Apple Pencil with wrong generation

I have bought an Apple Pencil Pro a few days ago and now that I opened and tried to pair it I've found out that it's not compatible with my device (iPad Pro 12.9). I haven't used the pencil yet and the pen hasn't been paired to any device so far; can I exchange it with an older generation (namely Apple Pencil 2nd Generation)? everything including the pen itself and the box is intact.
