Desktop not saving screenshots and being asked for login password

As of 3 days ago, my desktop is now asking for my log in password, every time I want to move an image or file, that is both when importing & exporting.

At the same time the screenshot shortcut stopped working.

When I do my usual command shift 4, the screenshot is captured, but not saved on the desktop as it usually is & not stored anywhere I can find it, also not shown in recents or a spotlight search.

I have no idea what has happened, I have resorted to doing screenshots via Preview, but its an arduous process.

Anyone any ideas please ?

Start with this...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?
