Migrating to Managed Apple IDs

Hello,

I'm new to Apple Devices and MDM. I would appreciate help with the specifics of how to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Our organization has iPhones in a user enrolled MDM. We want to switch to Managed Apple IDs so we can fully manage our devices.

Phones are currently configured with Personal appleid's in format: [username]@ourdomain.com . We are moving from iPhone 11s to 15s and 16s; a few have been deployed already without any MDM.

I have configured our Third Party identity provider to set up automated enrollment, but I need to configure the domain in ABM before I proceed.

Our ABM dashboard shows a number of User Name Conflicts and Unmanaged Apple IDs.

What steps do I need to take before capturing the domain to ensure that users are prepared to move to managed Apple IDs? How should I advise them to decide whether to transfer their personal account to a managed one and to manage their data so that they can have their personal data in their personal account (or even on a backup drive) and their corporate data safely managed? (emails, contacts, text history)

What steps need to be taken BEFORE the transfer to help with the separation? And what can we do AFTER to weed out personal data from our newly managed ID?

Many thanks for your help!

You don't need managed Apple IDs to fully manage devices. You need to purchase the devices through a reseller that supports Automated Device Enrollment, or you need to manually enroll the devices in Apple Business Manager using Apple Configurator. Managed Apple IDs on devices enrolled any other way will not change your capabilities.

All of your users who have conflicts will receive an email asking them to either migrate the account to managed, or to change the email associated with their existing account to a personal email address. Any developer account, business connect account, or podcast connect account need to be accounted for as well.
