AirTag Cover Removal NOT Rotation

I'm having a problem opening my AirTag (Battery Cover) to change the battery.

I can rotate the cover to my heart's content, but there is no detent or stop position for the OPEN position. Since the cover rotates 360º with no indication of reaching the right position, I can't open it. I can't even get a start prying with a small flat blade at various degrees of rotation.

I'd really appreciate any help. Maybe the degrees of counter-clockwise rotation to get the approximate alignment for cover removal. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Take a close look at the following image. Notice that there are small tangs on the AirTag's battery cover and corresponding slots in the tag's base that they go into. Pressing down, and then, rotating the cover counterclockwise will align these tangs with the slots to allow the cover to be removed. Reverse the process by first aligning the tangs with the slots, then press down, and rotate clockwise to secure the cover.

If the cover does not stop rotating, as you claim, then the tag may be damaged or defective. Did you purchase this AirTag directly from Apple or got it from another third-party source. If the latter, it could be a fake.

A perfect and extremely effective visual explanation of the problem area. Well done! However, I have been trying to achieve precisely the alignment you have pinpointed. This is one of those little issues that must be operator error - but I swear to God, I've been careful... I've mounted difficult lenses and complex connectors, but this little guy Is making me think about a tri-state killing spree.

I bet it's a minor manufacturing defect and my best bet is to replace it and melt the bad one with a large magnifying glass in the Arizona desert. As one does.
