Keychain Secure Notes to Sequoia Passwords app

Just updated from Sonoma to Sequoia 15.2

The Passwords app doesn't include the Secure Notes from Keychain. Is it possible to transfer these?

I have several 100 Secure Notes in my Keychain. I've used this approach to provide an extra level of security in protecting passwords. Not all relate to websites, many aren't used often.

I suppose I should be grateful Apple didn't just delete all the Keychain data

Agree

I've tried it and can find no way to do it other than one by one … 😵‍💫

Agree again

As I said, I have several 100s of Keychain Secure Notes. If I could keep it up without making any mistakes, it will take me several hours. To me sure I get it right, I'll need to spread this over quite a few days.

Agree, agree and agree 👍

One might have expected a bulk migration process to have been provided …

Hum, expectations from Apple are, unfortunately, sometimes greater than Apple has provided ?

Perhaps if enough Users bring this to Apple's attention, something may come of it ?

So, I've spent a few days working on this problem.

WARNING

First thing I eventually realised was that the update from Sonoma to Sequoia "lost" a large proportion of my Keychain Access Secure Notes, over 1/3 !!!

I had a feeling that some Secure Notes were missing and others out of date. Then I noticed that a Secure Note I know I had used a few weeks ago was no longer present. Dug around in various backups and snapshots and found a login keychain which was dated just before I updated. This had 519 Secure Notes but after the update, there were only 322!! The update to Sequioa had "lost" 197 Secure Notes - no idea where they went, certainly not in the new Passwords app !!!

Miln Keysafe tool

If you were a big user of Keychain Access Secure Notes, as I was, Apple's current copy/paste solution to the Notes app isn't a realistic option.

I eventually was pointed to the Miln Keysafe tool. Not ideal for many users as it runs under Terminal and only does half the job. It does extract the Keychain Secure Notes to text files but it is then necessary to use Automator/Applescript to add the file name to the first line of the txt file before importing into Notes. I haven't yet managed to get that righ … yet.

Thanks, just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing any tricksy ways of a bulk migration, like accessing a keychain file directly 😁

It does seem to be an issue that quite a few people have highlighted - I got into using Keychain Secure Notes years ago when macOS password handling for websites, etc, wasn't as sophisticated as it is now. Having just had a closer look, I have closer to 1,000! Some are quite old and haven't been accessed for several years but I'm reluctant to delate just in case …

Nothing was missed on your part 👍

Ouch, 1k Secure Notes in Keychain

Patience and patience and more patience as you are going through them all

Just to share if I may

I used to keep ( 20 years now ) and still do keep and text based file of all my passwords etc with a complex and strong Password Protection

At that time, I had no idea of Apple's plans for Keychain and now the newer Password application

Just sharing, though it does not really help moving 1,000 Secure Notes Out Keychain and into Passwords

Currently chatting with Apple Support …

Probably in error, the advisor I'm currently chatting with mentioned a 3rd party tool, Secure-Notes-Exporter … I'll see if I can find that and see if it works …

At least I have now managed to flag the problem to Apple support both by chat to an advisor and via feedback. No great expectations.
