In Numbers I can’t add a column

I can add a new column before columns F - BE, but not before columns A - E. I can add an empty column and drag and drop anywhere except before column E. It acts like it’s locked, but isn’t. There is a solid line running down between columns E and F, but I am stumped. I’m much more used to Excel, but have been using Numbers for a while.

It sounds like you have columns A-E defined as header columns.

Header rows and columns) are kind of 'fixed' in that they don't scroll as the table is scrolled, so their values remain visible (very handy when dealing with large tables of data).

Numbers supports up to 5 header columns, which would correspond to columns A-E. Since 5 is the most, you cannot insert a new column in this block since it would exceed the number of header columns allowed.

You can control the number of header columns (and rows)in the Table Inspector:

I'm pretty sure if you reduce this number you'll be able to insert columns between A and E.
