Is someone tracking this AirTag?
AirTag
It could make a sound, if someone nearby with an iPhone "sees" this tag, and then, tries to have it make a sound.
Ref:
Am I mistaken that no one should be able to see the tag unless you are sharing or have it enabled due to the pet being lost? Only my husband and I share the tag and we were in the same room as our dog
When you pair an AirTag with your iPhone or iPad, it becomes associated with your Apple Account. This is also where it becomes part of the "Find My network." By default, all iPhones also participate in this network. That would include not only your phone, but millions of other iPhones worldwide. That is the backbone of this network and how you are able to locate your AirTag when it is outside the Bluetooth range of your phone.
To prevent stalking, Apple incorporated the means for other iPhone/Android users to be notified if there is an AirTag nearby. That is covered in the first link I provided you earlier. The other phone user can, if concerned after being notified, can elect to have the tag play a sound so that they can try to locate it. You can see this as quite useful if you feel someone left a tag on or near them ... but, of course, there are other scenarios where this could be annoying ... especially for a pet ... and especially if that pet had experience with a training collar. It can cause the animal some level of trauma.
These tags are really not designed to be used for tracking either pets or people. They work best to help you locate a missing (mostly stationary) item, like car keys. For tracking pets, you should consider a device that is based on GPS technology, not Bluetooth.
From the other link I provided, you can see the other reasons that the AirTag can make a sound.
Thank you very much for taking the time to explain all of this in detail. Greatly appreciated! Looks like I will be looking into the GPS option.
You're very welcome!
