Mouse not recognized through single USB-C to USB-A connector on MacBook Air M1

So for the past year and a half I have been using a multi-port usb-c hub that worked just fine. Unfortunately, it died around a week ago, and I happen to have an official usb-c to usb-a adapter. I have a 2020 Mac air M1 btw. And while the usb-a hub I was using was working on the usb-c hub, now that I connect it to the single usb-c to usb-a adapter, it lights up as it used to do when connected to the other usb-c adapter, but nothing I connect to it work. I know that the hub works, because I used it on another machine, with the exact same mouse, and I know both the mouse and the adapter work, as I have just resorted to using the single adapter with my mouse and it works just fine. I have tried thing like setting>privacy and security > allows new accessories set to always, and that hasn't been working either. I am at a loss for solutions and turn to the community, hoping someone more knowledgeable than me will find and answer.
