Peripheral ports on Apple USB keyboard used with iOS devices

I am using an Apple A1242 wired USB keyboard to type on iOS devices (iPhone XS Max, iPad Pro) and would like to save data to a USB thumdrive, plugged into one of the two open USB ports on the left and right sides of the Apple keyboard (usually used for connecting Mac peripherals, such as USB wired mouse). When I plug in a USB thumb drive, it does show up in the Sidebar section of the Files app on the iPhone, but not consistently. I've unplugged the USB drive and reinserted it several times (and tried it with differetn drives), but the drive is not consistnetly recognized. I'm looking for a way to have this be a consistently avaialble storage option for my iPhone, used in this configuration.

Thanks.

I'd say there's not enough power for both things which may cause flakiness with the USB drive.

I guess the best test is if it works without the keyboard. Plug the flash drive directly into the Lightning adapter and see if it is seen correctly every time you try. If so, then. it may the combination of both devices makes it flaky or not enough power for both.

Thanks for the reply. I plug the USB keyboard into the iPhone via a USB-to-lightning adapter (Apple brand). Allows me to type and use most function keys (screen brightness, volume, etc.). My assumption was that something plugged into the USB hub on the keyboard should connect consistently to the iPhone via the USB-to-lightning connection. But perhaps the adapter does not support this, or there is not enough power to the hub from the iPhone to support.
