iPad Air M2 touch sensitivity works only while charging

I got an iPad Air 11 inch M2 in Dec 2024. Ever since I turned it on for the first time, the screen’s been much less sensitive compared to every other iPad versions and iPhone that I’ve used (including iPads from years ago). Trying to swipe up to go home or to go to the App Drawer requires multiple attempts of very purposeful, slow swipes up because the display struggles with recognising my gestures (in all 4 orientations). If I’m not pressing on the screen hard while scrolling a page, there’s always a delay in the movement.

I’ve tried with and without a screen protector but still have the same issue. Interestingly if I plug a charger in, the sensitivity increases to normal.

Is there a fix to this issue or should I take this to the Apple Store for a replacement?

Same exact issue. There is a lot on Reddit too, but no fix. Does Apple have a solution?

Spoke to the 'technician' at the Apple Store today. Nothing unusual showed up on the standard diagnostic test and according to him, if it behaves like the same models they have on display, it's not an issue and is just how Apple intends for the device to behave.

Almost seemed as if he was trained to downplay any issues with the display despite other iPad models on display not having any of the same issues.

I requested for it to be sent for further testing so hopefully they come back with a practical solution.

Good quality screen protectors explicitly designed for your iPad model (from a reputable manufacturer such as OtterBox or Zagg) will have negligible if any impact upon the touch sensitivity of your iPad screen. That said, many other off-brand or cheap screen protectors can interfere with the screen, in particular when using an Apple Pencil.

If the problem persists with the screen protector removed, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page.

Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:
