Apple AirPods 2 & Kindle Paperwhite

I have new AirPods 2 and a new Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. I got these purposely to work together to listen to books when I don’t want to or am too busy to read. Apparently, they don’t like to work together, I am finding out. I can listen for a little bit (90 seconds or so, sometimes sooner) then it starts to crackle and I hear static, then I hear nothing. Is there a fix for this? I am considering returning AirPods to get another brand that does work with Kindle, which seems ridiculous. Help?
