Uneven battery drainage of AirPods 4 ANC

I bought AirPods 4 ANC in early January and noticed an issue with uneven battery drainage. For example, the left earbud sometimes drains faster than the right one by more than 10%, or both earbuds may drain 10% in just 15 minutes. The store replaced the earbuds for me, but after bringing the new pair home, I’m seeing the exact same issue.

At first, they discharged evenly. Then the right earbud drained 5% faster than the left one (left: 91%, right: 86%). I left the earbuds playing music while doing other tasks, and after about an hour and a half, the left earbud had drained 14% faster than the right one (left: 48%, right: 62%).

I’m using iOS version 18.2.1, and the earbuds are on firmware version 7B20. Could anyone confirm if they’ve experienced a similar problem? Is this normal, or is it a defect? This is already my second pair with the same issue.

Here’s what’s happening:

- If I leave the earbuds in the case for 1-6 hours at 100% charge, they lose over 10% charge within 10 minutes of use (sometimes one earbud, sometimes both). It seems like they don’t hold 100% charge for long after being taken out of the case.

- However, when I open the case after such a long period, the iPhone screen shows both earbuds at 100% with the lightning bolt (as if they just finished charging).

- On the other hand, if I start using them shortly after charging (5-20 minutes), they hold 100% for about 20-25 minutes before draining.

- Overall, they last over 4 hours without ANC but with speech recognition and spatial audio enabled. When they don’t drain immediately, they last 20-30 minutes longer, which feels significant.

- After extended use, there’s a 5-12% difference in charge between the earbuds—is that normal?

**What I’ve tried so far:**

- Reset the earbuds to factory settings multiple times.

- Reset my iPhone to factory settings.

- Disabled Find My for the earbuds.

- Updated iOS from 18.2.1 to 18.3.

- Fully drained the earbuds and case to 0% (though the case showed 1% and made sounds with the indicator light on).

- Waiting for a firmware update (current firmware: 7B20).

I already returned one pair, but the replacement has the same issue. The store’s diagnostics found no problems, so I’m wondering if this is just how they’re designed or if there’s a fix I’m missing.

**Details:**

- iOS 18.3

- AirPods firmware: 7B20

- Assembled in Vietnam

Here's the translation:

From today's observations: I found out that one of the earbuds (or both) can drain by 10% or more when left in the case in standby mode for several hours—like after sleeping, for example. However, when I charge the earbuds through the case and use them shortly after charging, they work fine. My earbuds were assembled in Vietnam on 11/05/2024.

My Airpods 4 (without ANC) behave similarly in parts. They usually discharge differently, just not as much as yours. I still don't have a solution for this as this regular knowledgebase stuff does not have any beneficial effect. What's even more annoying is that the Airpods 4 also charge much more slowly than the Airpods 3 and that the uneven battery levels are no longer equalised as well during charging as they were with the Airpods 3.

I'm still hoping for an software update, but I think it will be in vain.

Cheers! Same issues with my 4 ANC. After numerous trials I’ve narrowed down to 2 issues: left pod only discharges faster when ANC is active (if anc is off, levels of discharge are pretty similar) and only if you take out left pod from the case first when anc is active (if you pull the right pod first, that will discharge faster). Those issues are separate. I think there’s an issue with firmware (7B20). Oh, and my AirPods are less than a month old.

I think you have tried out what is possible and that it probably corresponds to the design currently available - after all, the SW 7D20 has been the current version for over four months.

Furthermore you are absolutely right that the performance experienced does not correspond to the quality that one should be able to expect from Apple products, nor in principle with at least perfect quality. I seriously hope that Apple will do better.
