Backup of external drives stalling

I have a MacBook Air, running Sonoma 14.7.2. My set up has an external used as a backup drive, and five (5) external drives with a large amount of files (approx. 6TB). When I try to back up, it stalls after getting to anywhere from 35-60%.

I had this issue once before last year and through this site, found out that the problem would be fixed upon next update. However, this problem has popped up again.....

If you are currently using Time Machine for backups, you may want to temporarily disconnect all but one drive at a time to use process of elimination to determine if one particular drive (or its contents) is the issue.

An alternative would be to try software like Carbon Copy (https://bombich.com/) that would allow you to separate your drive backups into several discrete backup jobs. Time Machine is great when it works, but can certianly be a mystery when it doesn't.
