Spelling Errors are not underlined Mail and other apps

I have the same issue as this:

Spelling Errors are not underlined in Not… - Apple Community

I have tried all the fixes, including that command in the Terminal, it works for about 5 minutes and then stops working.

I definitely have Correct Spelling Automatically enabled in System prefs too.

It is driving me mad and affecting my work, it isnt even spell checking this! Currently I have to copy entire emails out to Microsoft Word, which works and the spell check highlights misspelt words and then I correct words, and copy and paste the text back in.

2021 Macbook Pro running 14.5

Any ideas how to fix this?

Funnily enough, after posting this I realised my Mac was stuck on 14.5, and even with the auto update enabled, it just would not update to the latest Sonoma.

After starting up in safe mode I have now managed to update to 14.7.2 and the issue has gone.

very odd all round
