Markup selection enabled by default in Microsoft Word on Mac

In Microsoft Word (v. 16.93 under MacOS Sonoma (14.6.1)), does anyone know how to prevent a document at opening it from Markup being selected? Every time I reopen a previously prepared template, Word has Markup selected, showing a ton of red lines from text targets to a sidebar and highlighting. And if a document with markups displayed is emailed, will the red markups show for the recipient?
