The subject says it all. I get that if the Spotlight index lived outside the encrypted dmg that it would certainly undermine the whole security, but I would have thought the index would live on/in the dmg itself and only be available if mounted. Am I doing something wrong?

I can't believe I did that - I know better! That location was indeed on the exclusion list. I removed it and now it's searchable. My only lingering concern now is confirmation if the index for that encrypted image resides within the mounted dmg itself (good) or on the Mac (bad - because would undermine the encryption). I'm assuming from the first reply that it exists within the dmg...

OK, second try. In the spotlight settings check the exclusion list. Is it there and can it be removed? if it is not in the list, try adding it and then removing it.
also, if it wasn’t clear in my first post, I do not know if it is even possible. I can see where Apple would automatically make it excluded to start with.
Is the mounted image writeable with enough space to write the index?
I don’t know if that is the issue, but would be my first line of investigation.
My understanding is the index is written to the same volume, but I don't know for sure.
There will be a hidden .Spotlight-V100 folder at the root level of the mounted volume. However, I don't know if that confirms that the files are not being written somewhere else.
Eject it and search for something you know is on the encrypted volume.
