desktop pics folder does not reflect desktop

Hi I'm on Sonoma 14.7.3 using Safari and my desktop pics folder does not show the pics on my desktop. And I am not offered a desktop option, just desktop pics option. I used to have a desktop option is there a way to get that back? Thanks
