Designating where an app opens

I frequently, but do not always have more than one display attached to my laptop. Is there a way to designate that an app should open on my main laptop screen whenever it opens, or if all apps should open on my laptop when the first window opens?

Example:

I may open Filemaker from my laptop. When I'm in the operating room, the first screen sometimes opens on my laptop, other times it opens on the large display where I will also have my planning images displayed. That is well off to the side of where the laptop sits, so hard to see from in front of the laptop. It seems random as to where the first window opens. Can it be specified per app or in general.

Osirix, for example, give you an option as to where to open images and the DB when there are more than one screen. I don't see this bult in functionality elsewhere.

Thanks,

Adam

With more than one display connected, you can press and hold the Dock icon of an application, and from the Options submenu you can choose to assign to "Desktop on Display 1", or "Desktop on Display 2".
