Why is Canon printer not printing from my iPhone?

Phone is connected, printer connected, phone has latest IOS, printer has latest firmware. No blockages, ink is fine and ready to go, but nothing when I send it via direct WiFi or network. I think it’s since the latest iOS update?

I doubt the issue is caused by the update. I have three Canon printers and none of them have ever had issues with an update. For clarity I assume when you say "send it via direct by wi-fi or network" you mean AirPrint?

If so perhaps this will help you sort things out: Using AirPrint

Normally, it helps to know the exact printer model.

If your Canon printer is one of the models listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support, and it is connect to the same network (Wi-Fi router) as the iPhone, a full power-cycle sequence (do not forget the router) may be worth testing:

  • Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the iPhone, and all other devices/computers.
  • Wait two to three minutes.
  • Power on the router.
  • Wait two to three minutes.
  • Power on the printer.
  • Wait a minute or two.
  • Power on the iPhone and all other devices/computers.

If you are using a VPN app, try to turn it off or remove it (at least temporarily).

Same happened to me. iPhone 10xr worked and iPad 9gen worked fine.

iPad, sometime late Dec 2024 stopped, iPhone Jan 2025 stopped.

  • Canon MF220

No firmware updates applied to printer since maybe 2020.

Seems to me either Apple removed CUPS support on it or the updates injured it, meaning next step is to back up all data and rebuild a new profile on both devices.

  • Thats an evil of rolling upgrades, foobars

Doesn’t seem we can update a post, so in addition to the above: I wiped my router and resettled as well.

  • MX Linux, Linuxmint, Mac Catalina PC all work fine.
  • Wifi only or network settings off the printer.
  • No printing from web browsers (any), apps that allows printing, or PDFs from Files local or iCloud. Nothing.

So yes, I agree with Nan, after iOS upgrade it broke, not necessarily immediately but a short time after - but then again I’m not out printing things right after an upgrade finishes. Looks like that needs to be a new check with iOS - I seem to recall having to wipe my phones and iPads in the past after updates happened consecutively for other issues, was print one I don’t recall.

  • It’s never fun rebuilding what was once we’ll set up for me.

I never said I wiped with every update. I said I’ve had to in the past on an update, doesn’t mean every. I’ve seen updates on other OS other than Apple wigout after an update. Apple is not exclusively exempted. I doesn’t matter there is a user community that “hasn’t reported it”…um yet…doesn’t mean a thing. It’s still real, like men are men and woman are woman- nothing in between. There’s a reason I haven’t purchase anything newer from Apple since the 2 oldest devices owned.

  • Apple has been caught hindering old hardware to incentivize uses to by new…among other ideologies it has.
  • Linux and non-Google Android appears to be the way…if you’re Apple support, thanks for helping me finalize my decision.

So if the update broke it then why isn’t everybody seeing this? Can you explain how you came to this conclusion? And if you are wiping your iPhones after every update because of issues then why is that not happening to all of us too. There are now two billion iPhones users in the world.

Let’s just say I strongly disagree both your analysis both from personal experience and the general user experience around the world.
