Sonoma Login Screen is Grayed-Out

I'm currently running Sonoma 14.7.3 on a 2019 MacBook Pro. After upgrading from Ventura to Sonoma a year or so ago, the login screen now comes up all light gray (with the clock, password textbox, tiny little icons for the two users, and the default icons in the upper right corner). My understanding is that the login screen is supposed to show the default image of Sonoma Valley. I use a dark blue custom color for my desktop wallpaper. There is also a "lockscreen.png" file which is solid dark blue, inside a folder, which itself is inside the /Library/Caches/Desktop Pictures folder.

Please advise if this is "normal" or not.

The default macOS Sonoma login screen does have the Sonoma Valley image. Once you log in, you should be presented with the Desktop wallpaper that you chose.

Indeed the folder location you mention in your post should contain a single folder, and inside that folder would be the default lockscreen.png. In my case, the default .png looks like the following:
