How to - Exporting from Excel and Importing into Numbers?

I'm switching over from Windows Word and Excel to Pages and Numbers.

I'm having an issue with exporting from Excel and importing into Numbers.

I'm not sure which extension to export it to.

When I try to open after having saved (exported) it using the (.tsv) extension I get this image below but I'm not sure how to navigate or fill in the information so that it will look the way it does in the original

Help gratefully appreciated.

That last sentence there is a big red flag.

Importing your spreadsheet in this way WILL FAIL and will not give you a Numbers spreadsheet that looks 'the way it does in the original'.

By definition, TSV can and will only export the values in the respective cells. You will lose ALL style formatting, formulas, layouts, charts - everything.

That's because TSV is about the lowest common denominator and only does the bare minimum.

Fortunately, there's a much easier way.

In Numbers, use File -> Open and choose your .xls file. Done. All formulas, layouts, formatting, etc.

Numbers can open Excel files directly, and maintain something like 99% of the original document format/features.

Yes .xlsx as the .xls format is too old.

As you become more familiar with Numbers you will find that may not want to keep "the likeness of the original." Trying to make Numbers look like Excel can be inefficient as that will mean you aren't taking advantage of the design differences.

In Excel you typically have one big grid of cells. In Numbers you often have multiple tables in the same sheet.

To get an idea of effective document design in Numbers be sure to have a look at the templates at File > New in the menu.

You can then modify your original document to take advantage of the design.

Keep in mind that documents that originated in Excel sometime have mysterious formatting glitches in Numbers. If that happens you can start a new Number document and copy-paste data into the new document.

Thank you both for replying.

I think I got it!

When I tried to open the file, that I downloaded, in to Numbers. It's greyed out.

So I tried saving it as an .xls but it said things would be deleted and then when I tried to open it in Numbers I got an "unsupported version" message.

Thank you again. :)
