Wallet not using Face ID to open app

Face ID used to work when I was attempting access to the credit card info in my Wallet app. Now it doesn't even come up. Wallet just opens the info for anyone to see.

I have watched videos on which settings to turn on. I have followed the instructions and there is no change to the process.

I have hidden my face and it still opens.

Is this a bug that was introduced in the most recent software update?

My real question is how do I solve this?

iPhone 16 Pro Max, iOS 18

Opening the Wallet app never required Face ID. Neither did tapping a credit card to examine its details. Doing so does require your iPhone to be unlocked, so surely nobody can perform these steps until you unlock your iPhone.

Using that credit card to complete a purchase using Apple Pay - that’s what requires Face ID.
