HomePod crackle and popping sounds and can't use them

I have 3 first generation HomePods and all 3 are spazzing out on me. Tried resetting and one of them will work for a little bit and then popping and cracking again. One won't reset at all and got very hot when I was trying to reset it and the 3rd plays for about 5 mimutes and then cracking and popping. What is up with these? Kinda expensive to just stop working, is there a recall or fix?

There is no recall and this model was discontinued, so no warranty.I had one do that and there is a solution that might work but as you’ve said this model can be very hard to reset or even set up again.so it’s do it at your own risk! I’d also question as to why your HomePod is getting very hot? It’s best if you can plug it directly into the wall and if you must use an extension cord don’t let it share this cord with other higher voltage items. Never daisy chain cords. Changing how I plugged mine in reduced the overheating issue.

To fix the sounds:

first start by unplugging HomePod for over 24 hours

plug back in and do the following:

  1. Unplug HomePod or unplug the power adapter for HomePod mini, wait 10 seconds, then plug HomePod back in.
  2. Wait 10 seconds, then touch and hold your finger to the top of HomePod.
  3. The white spinning light will turn red. Keep your finger down.
  4. Siri will say that your HomePod is about to reset. When you hear three beeps, you can lift your finger.

After you reset HomePod, you can set up HomePod again.

Most of the people who answer you are just trying to rack up points for helping in the community. I’m answering because I saw your post and had the same problem with a 1st gen HomePod. What I learned from a repair site is that there are four capacitors on the audio board that can die. When they do, you get the annoying popping sound. I decided to have fun and do a complete tear down of the HomePod and replace the capacitors. The two things I learned were that it wasn’t fun, and I’m not as good at fixing small circuits as I thought I would be. It didn’t work at all after I got done with it. On the bright side, I’ve had the 1st gen HomePod pair since they first came out, so I got my money’s worth from them. I also found that Apple has partnered with ID.me, and they give a 10% discount on all Apple products, so I got a pair of 2nd gen HomePods for $60 less ordering directly from Apple. Sorry I couldn’t give you better advice, but the popping is explained on ifixit if you want to read it. My other first gen HomePod is now refusing to reset, so I’m glad I got a pair of the new ones. Good luck.

Thank you. I went to the Apple Store yesterday after they told me they absolutely fix them and after a 30 mile drive I was told they never heard of such an issue and said they don’t fix them and best they could do is sell me one for $279. I explained I have 3 of them all failing or failed and their response was well we have the 2nd generation you can buy. Total waste of time and as a long time apple customer I’m very disappointed. I tried the 2nd generation but returned because I didn’t like the sound. Appreciate your honest response. The one I brought in gets 3/4 through setup and then pops and shuts down. Give me an error code

Excuse me but I am not trying to rack up points! I own 9 HomePods, 4 are the OG model and still work. One did the popping thing and I fixed it with the solution I provided. This can be a sign they are on their way to dying completely as others have stated these symptoms may happen prior to their demise. The solution I provided has often worked for the popping sound issue. I also felt this might extend their life if the OP could try this to save his HomePod. As well as being careful how they are plugged in to avoid overheating. Overheating was another symptom. Some of us have been lucky they still work and others have not. Hence them being discontinued.

As to getting it repaired, we cannot post third party repair sites on here. I’ll just tell you his name is Nic, to google that
