How to prevent handoff to homepods

There used to be an option on all the Apple operating systems to prevent handoff happening to HomePods. I can no longer find this option in settings on any of the Apple operating systems,. Where can I find it?

The problem I am trying to solve is simply that I am using my Apple device (iPad, MacBook, or iPhone) to play music to 2 different AirPlay destinations, one of which is a HomePod. When using the Music app, I lose control of what is playing! I cannot pause, change, repeat or do anything that I would normally do with the music app. My watch is even telling me that my phone is not playing music!

The only way to stop the music seems to be through the abandonware which is the home app which does not have any of the facilities of the music app… That is once you found beeping HomePod within the device list.

I cannot believe that a setting would be removed by Apple without testing, but then they also bought us a setting app that has no effective facility.

btw. As my original host implied this occurs on all HomePods within the household, and is a problem with all devices trying to use said HomePods. I clarify this because this forum system seems to want me to choose a particular device and operating system, et cetera.

You cannot prevent this type of hand off from occurring. If your device is fetching a stream only to pass it on to the HomePod to play it then the HomePod is designed to take native control of that stream. What you can do is open control centre on your Apple device, tap the AirPlay icon, and then tap Control Other Speakers & TVs to get playback and volume controls for the device that is playing.

You can also take control of the HomePod through the Music app. See Remote control for HomePod, not using AirPlay - Apple Community.

Well who knew that there was an option to disable the default behaviour if you looked hard enough?

On your iPhone try Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity > Handoff > Off.

On a Mac use System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff > Allow Handoff... > Off.

That is not correct. Until the recent (ai) update there was a setting that allowed users to exempt handoff from homepods. It has either been removed or simply renamed … I can no longer find it. The absence of the setting is possibly yet another os bug … more than a few are known!

please do not respond with assertive statements saying that something is not possible. You will be posting a link to apple support or telling me to turn it off and on again next!!! I see that you have many ‘points’ … are you a bot?

Op: the setting allowed handoff for all devices except those brainless homepods. We could keep the useful handoff facilities whilst disabling it on homepods.

I can no longer find the setting to disable homepod handoff whilst keeping handoff. Feels like more Apple bugs that should have been spotted whilst instead they were talking to shareholders about the AI that nobody asked for (and Apple have failed to deliver).

How can you have a device removing control of your music away from the music app? Buggy, poorly tested and no real support.
