The first thing to establish is what type of computer you are using (or intend to use) with this iPod. If it is a:

    • Windows PC, in which case you use iTunes, so do you have iTunes installed on the computer and is it Windows 10, 11 or an earlier version?
    • Mac using OS Mojave (10:14) or earlier, in which case you use iTunes, which should be installed by default
    • Mac using OS Catalina (10:15) or later, in which case you use Finder to manage the iPod (as there is no iTunes for that OS)

If (or when) asked while installing iTunes, do not install the Apple Music app, Apple Devices app, or Apple TV app as these will prevent you accessing your own library of music. Also, if you are intending to use your own (purchased) music with this iPod, do not try the Apple Music subscription service.

Note the difference between the Apple Music app and Apple Music, the subscription service. They are not the same thing.

Next, you need to add your purchased music to iTunes (or to the music app on Mac OS Catalina). If you intend to rely on a streaming service (such as Apple Music).

Once you've got that far, post back for whichever route you are using.
