Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor -> View (menu) -> All Processes -> CPU (tab)
If kernel_task is using a large percentage of your Mac CPU - Apple Support
If this is an Intel Mac, then it is possible that your fans and heatsinks are clogged with dust/pollen/smoke particles and need to be cleaned.
