Trash can in limbo - keeps deleting files and won't stop

This is on a new MacBook Air running Sequoia 15.3.2. Previously, on an older Mac I was able to correct this by force quitting Finder which would then restart. Now the only way to empthy the trash can is by clicking on the small 'x' on the right side of the window.
