No Sound in Safari Browser after Switching from Messages app

I’ve noticed whilst watching YouTube in my Safari browser on my iPhone that if I navigate to my Messages app to respond to a text, then navigate back to Safari my video will have no audio. It happens fairly consistently.

Refreshing the browser window does not return the audio. I have to close the entire Safari app by swiping it away and reloading the app to return sound.

Some extra information:

iPhone model: iPhone 15 Plus

iOS version: up to date 18.3.2

Browser: Safari (on YouTube website)

Cause of issue: going from YouTube in Safari to Messages app and then back

Issue: all audio lost in all browser windows on Safari

What I have already done to try to resolve:

  • restarted device
  • made sure iOS is up to date
  • uninstalled and reinstalled Safari
  • refreshed Safari browser windows (did not work)
  • closed and reopened Safari application (returns audio until the next time I check messages application)
  • have cleared browser cache/cookies on Safari
  • checked audio settings on iPhone and settings for Safari app, nothing that would cut audio in switching from app to app, and only ever happens when going from Messages back to Safari, no other apps cause this strange interaction

if anyone has any idea why this is happening or has encountered it before, please let me know, thanks!
