How do I resolve duplicate group lists in 'Contacts Version 14.0' on iPhone?

This program has been corrupt since Day 1 of ownership. Now it seems that contacts has migrated to the cloud but the problem still exists. I have about 100+ identical group lists. I was told to delete them 1 by 1. However, on the program, the magic ball comes on and on icloud, each deletion takes forever.
