How do I turn off voice features on my MacBook Pro?

The computer (macBook Pro, 4 years old) suddenly started talking to me. I'm too deaf to understand what it's saying, but it's always just a few words. I had been playing around with some adjustments in system settings, but have no idea what could have created this change.

Ok, here is another one to check

  •  > System Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content, and make sure the bottom 4 items are all switched off. Some of these would cause speech much more frequently then just text messages, but worth a shot:

Speak announcements

Speak selection

Speak item under the pointer

Speak typing feedback
