The computer (macBook Pro, 4 years old) suddenly started talking to me. I'm too deaf to understand what it's saying, but it's always just a few words. I had been playing around with some adjustments in system settings, but have no idea what could have created this change.

Thanks for the suggestions. But both items are off and I still get the voice. I think it might be only for text messages.
THANK YOU! You're the first one who gave me the reply that seems to be right on. I just set it, so I can't be sure it works. But I imagine it will because it addresses the actual problem.
