Why did Sequoia upgrade move some folders to 'Relocated Items' and how can I restore them?

I couldn't get my fonts to work properly after the upgrade and found out that my ••FONTS folder, and two other folders (•WORK and •PLAY), were moved, and buried, into a subfolder called "Relocated Items". Why did it do this? And can I move them back? If not, where can I put them, as I don't want these 3 folders buried deep in my hard drive (see bottom yellow glow). What's going on?

when they split the start up drive into a system volume and a data volume, I think that was Big Sur

And this is an Apple forum, so I'm here asking them.

We’re all just users, here. Apple has not responded to a single post on this forum ever. But they have indicated they may ask for further information.

Sequoia has restricted this function. No OS's prior to Sequoia did this.

Yes, every macOS for at least the last five years has restricted the root level of the start up drive. I have no idea how you managed to avoid that up to this point.

If you want your fonts, available to all users, then place them in /Library/Fonts folder. Otherwise put them in your user Library/Fonts folder.

I've been operating a Mac since 1987, daily, for work. So I know this.

I’ve been operating a Mac since 1984 daily so I know this more than you know this

So where do you place your work and other stuff?

I store my stuff in my home folder as is the unix paradigm. There are several folders set up for some categories, but you can create your own or create sub-folders in the top-level ones.

I'm not one that likes cluttering up my desktop.
I like hardly anything on my desktop.

I don't store anything on my Desktop. Seems silly to me as I would have to move windows around to see what is there.

Apple Support has an article online that may help with some of the answers to this situation:

See what to do: If a Relocated Items folder appears on your Mac after upgrading macOS - Apple Support

Am not sure whether this is relevant or not ... may be "old school"

This third-party (non-Apple) online article : Special Characters and Naming Files and Folders

says:

"It's important to only use alphanumeric characters in your file and folder names. There are only two special characters that should ever be used in file or folder names: _ (underscore) or - (dash)".

We are all Apple users, like yourself, in the community, so Apple is not here to explain why it does what it does. The way I've always understood it, anything to do with the system files is best left up to the system, if we want smooth system operation. Eg: You could contact Apple via Mac mini - Official Apple Support

Theres a "Get support - start now" link at the bottom of their website.

Re: No pdf's

Well, seems as there was no alias on the desktop, and no Relocated items folders in place, so Apple may have dealt with everything already ... except for the issue of your fonts not working properly.

Just discovered this other thread:

Wondering if this info. can help with the font files:

See how to: Install and validate fonts in Font Book on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"To use fonts in your apps, you need to install the fonts using Font Book. When you’re installing fonts, Font Book lists any problems it finds for you to review. You can also validate fonts later."

Regarding the link you both gave me, it states...

"You can find the Relocated Items folder in the Shared folder within the Users folder. An alias to the folder is placed on your Mac desktop—double-click the folder to open it. The PDF document in the Relocated Items folder explains what to do with files placed in this folder."

The OS upgrade did not place any aliases on my desktop. The •WORK and •PLAY alias folders you see in the screenshot above, I created myself and have been on my desktop for years. Also, within the Relocated Items folder (where I found it buried deeply in my HD) there are no instructional pdf files to be found anywhere. If anyone has a copy of this pdf, feel free to link it for me. So, thank you both for that link, but it hasn't explained where I can move these folders to once I get them out of the Relocated Items folder, and that's what I want to know. Why won't it let me move my old fonts folder into Smittyboy?

And I just tried changing my font folder name from "••FONTS" to "-FONTS" and it still will not let me move that folder into Smittyboy, so it's not a character issue.

So, just as a test...

I created a new untitled folder on my desktop and tried to move it into Smittyboy (labeled "Current Hard Drive" above). I can't move ANYTHING (files or folders) into the hard drive now, so it's not just these 3 buried folders. I've been on a Mac since 1987. I've never seen this happen. I don't want a bunch of files and folders sitting on my desktop. I like a very clean and sparse desktop. I've always been able to place folders on my hard drive, until this Sequoia upgrade.

What is going on?

If you haven't already : Maybe check for a folder with .pdf in the above location:

ie: Mac Hard Drive > Users > Shared

That's what I'm trying to figure out.

As you can see from the first photo in this thread, I use to be able to put ANY folder I wanted into the hard drive.

I can't do that now, and just want someone to explain why. Up until this current Sequoia update it would work. Not now.

I'm fairly certain at this point, that I lost use of my fonts because when I upgraded to Sequoia it moved my fonts folder to a Relocated Items folder. If you move your fonts folder, CC and Typeface can't find it, and you have to relink both of those programs to where the fonts folder has moved to. I just want to know why Sequoia moved my font folder and put it somewhere else??? My font folder has ALWAYS been sitting in my hard drive FOREVER, for yeras and years, and this new OS upgrade doesn't want it there and I want to know why. That's the question I currently want an answer to, and that is why I am posting this question in the Sequoia forum. Where are the experts when I need them?

Since when? Look at the top photo.

My font folder ALWAYS sat at the top level of my HD.

It was NEVER buried in a folder somewhere else on the drive.

Thank you, again for this link, but it's not telling me WHY the files/folders were moved, and WHY I can't put them back (it won't let me). I don't want to start putting my folders and files in the Shared folder within the Users folder. I've NEVER, NEVER, EVER, EVER had to do that...EVER. For almost 40 years on a Mac, I've NEVER had to do that. I want to know WHY NOW? What's the deal? Nobody has answered that yet. Where are the Apple experts?

I have a MacMini (2018) and have been running Mojave since I bought it (2018). I'm one of those guys who when I have a nice stable operating system, and programs that I use with it, I don't see a need to upgrade. It's only when things start acting wonky, with browsers and programs, that I finally upgrade the OS. So, it's been over 6 years since I upgraded my OS, and you said 5 years, so there you go. I wasn't aware they did this. But, thank you for your input. This is what I was trying to find out, and it explains my issue. You gave me my answer. Kudos!!
