Finder Search not finding Files

Some files and folders visible in the Finder are not found by name. A portion of the name entered in the search box does not result in that folder or file showing in the result list whether or not "Name contains" is selected.

In the directory hierarchy ( a>b>missing files ) some of the directories are found and some are not -- there is no obvious difference between the found and missing files or folders. Eg. dir a is found and dir b is not. A copy of one of the files in 'b' is on an USB drive and it is found.

Is there a way to rebuild the underling index to the search feature or restore Search to accurate behavior?
