Another user stated that with Sequoia he cannot backup his external boot drive using Time Machine. I just tested the reverse by trying to restore files from Time machine (of my internal drive) to an external cloned boot drive and was not able to. Migration started but an error occurred at the end. So looks like Apple has added another issue along with AI that discourages using an external boot drive with Mac.
They boot fine. The issue appears to be that an external drive and Time machine do not get along. If you want to use an external boot drive all the time and expect Time Machine to back it up it appears it will not.
External boot drives haven't been supported for years.
Every now and then some rando will chip in claimed it works perfectly for them. But that's the opposite of typical issues. Normally, something works for 99,999,999 people. But when it doesn't work for one specific person, the cause must be some Apple bug. The only fix is to submit feedback and dutifully wait at least a dozen years for Apple to fix the bug.
But external boot drives are the opposite. Few people ever try it. Those few that do have constant problems. But the fact that one (1) person claims to use it means it must be a 100% supported, guaranteed feature.
In fact, Apple has a policy where you can take any computer that won't boot from an external, take it into an Apple Store, and get a free replacement on the spot. Trust me, bro.

I made a point to reference you, or people like you, in my post. Just because you can do one specific task in an unsupported configuration doesn't mean that any other task in this unsupported configuration will work.
I understand that you've only said that you can boot iMac Pro from an external drive with Sequoia installed. People don't understand those kinds of specific circumstances. They interpret that to mean that all features of macOS 16.0 are guaranteed to run perfectly on M5 MacBook Pro when booted from any type of external device.

That I never tried. I just have the internal setup with Time Machine. The backup drive isn't large enough to backup both in any case.
