Why was my old credit card charged for an in-app purchase after removing it from Apple Pay?

I wanted to change credit cards for Apple from my Capital one card so I made my new card the default and removed the capital one weeks ago. My Apple subscription came through on the new card fine, but Sunday I made an in App purchase to G5 for $106.24 came through on my old Capital One card. What gives?

You seem to be referencing 2 different and separate payment mechanisms.

Subscriptions on your Apple account use the payment methods added to your Apple Account directly.

Payments done using Apple Pay, use the payment methods added to the Wallet App not the ones on your Apple Account.

If the $106.24 payment method was done actually using Apple Pay then it would use whatever card is set as the default card in the Wallet app unless you manually select a different one, rather than the card in your Apple account.

If you changed the card on your Apple Account but not in the Wallet, then your Capital One card would still be used as default for payments over Apple Pay, in stores, websites and apps that directly support Apple Pay.

When using Apple Pay, the default card's image would be shown along with the last 4 numbers of the card for identification.

It was charged because you agreed to have Apple charge the card for any future purchases, such as subscriptions, until the subscription was canceled. Evidently, you didn’t follow the terms & conditions and cancel your subscription.

Apple may grant a request for refund if submitted promptly. If you need to request a refund, instructions are provided at the link below,
