How to remove the black line in Numbers spreadsheet?

The spread sheet opens but cannot be edited. I have rebooted numbers and the spreadsheet but the problem remains. When I click on any part of the spreadsheet a thin black line appears around the spreadsheet. There is an "x" in the corners of the line to remove it. But doing so does not restore the spreadsheet functionality.
