when I type 40.75 in some Numbers cells, it displays on screen as 57.04

Do you have anything set up on your computer for left-to-right text? Any languages or input sources (keyboards)?
That sounds strange.
Are you looking at the results in a cell that contains a formula?
Do you get unexpected results when you type in other applications?

Hi. No formula in the cells. Not aware of any other unexpected results in other apps.
No - this reverse order only appears in the occasional cell. Unless I have discovered an unknown keystroke sequence.
Why does Numbers show reverse values in cells?
