how to stop numbers extensions on numbers spreadsheets
After creating new numbers spreadsheets, the numbers extension continues to appear on name of the spreadsheet after asking for no extentions

And, for clarity, how are you 'asking for no extensions'?
For the latter, there are kind of three levels...
When you save a file, you may type a file name without a '.numbers' extension, but Numbers (like most apps) will automatically add a filename extension.
Secondly, in the Finder, you can select a file and use File -> Get Info. In the Name and Extension section there is an option to Hide Extension. This is a setting saved with each file to indicate whether it's filename extension should be shown or not.
Even if the individual file's option is set to not show, the Finder will still show it if the Finder -> Settings -> Advanced -> Show all filename extensions is turned on. This overrides the per-file setting and shows all extensions if enabled.
This option has to be turned OFF for the Finder to honor per-file settings in the Get Info window.
