Why Cell A127 selects the whole row in Numbers app?

As an issue I have located in an attached Numbers document for viewing. Cell A127 will cover the entire row when I hold shift and cross upwards to A4. I believe this the root issue of another which would be that I cannot make a header column. Someone advise me on what to do here? troubled numbers file

The problem is that in between rows 4 and 127 you have a bunch of filtered-out rows that are not displaying. (You have a filter set to exclude blank cells). That's half of the problem.

The second half is that within those hidden rows are a number of rows (specifically, 11, 22, 33, 40.. and more) where you have merged all the cells in that row into one.

Now you should be able to understand the problem. Essentially, Cell A11 extends all the way across to J11 (likewise for A22, A33, etc.). So when you try to select A4:A127, Numbers will inherently select A11 (even though it's filtered), and that will force the selection to extend to column J, because cell A11 is 10 columns wide.

You'll need to remove the merged cells to be able to select cells in just column A

I'm not sure Apple will update Numbers to change this behavior.

There are two alternatives that may be useful, depending on what you're trying to do.

If you're trying to select cells A4 and A127 then you can use Command-Click to effect a non-contiguous selection (Click cell A4 then hold the command key and click cell C127).

This also works for dragging across a range to select non-contiguous ranges.

Or, if you're trying to copy the entire column of cells, you can click the column header (A, in this case) and copy. This will just copy the visible cells, honoring the filters.
