Apple Pay works on one website but fail on another with the same card

I used apple pay on one website that accepts it. 5 minutes later I go to a different site that accepts apple pay, and the payment continually fails. Same card that I used minutes earlier successfully. No reason, no trouble shooting, just “sorry chump, no can do”. How is it that the same card/setup works with one website and not the other? Why doesn’t Apple Pay give you a reason for the failure? I have no problem updating items. Yes, a bit frustrated here.

It’s probably a failure at the merchant’s website. It’s not a hardware, software or settings issue if it works at some websites, but not others. I suspect poor implementation of the Apple Pay WebKit and API by the merchant’s web team. You can try a different browser. Apple Pay is designed to work best with Safari, but should work equally well with most (all?) versions of Chrome.

In regard to no reason for failure, that would be a merchant issue. The Apple Pay payment token is generated on your iPhone (or other Apple device) and is transmitted directly to the merchant’s payment system. If the merchant’s system isn’t set to generate an error code to your device there is no way for Apple or their engineers to determine the issue.
