numbers app not wanting to do a currencyconvert

if some one can help me  please with this. in the numbers app version 14.4 it seems like the currencyconvert formula do not want to work as it used to I will add some photo's as for the formula to see what I mean.

on a older numbers doc I do have the formula still works and seem to still do as it intended to but if I try to use it in a new numbers doc it do not want to work but when I copy it from the old doc to new it will work. only do not want to work if I tape it in a new formula it will not work in the new or old doc.

photo nr 1 as you can see it will not let me tape in USD as the currency code

photo nr 2 show the formula is working in a old numbers doc that I do have

photo nr 3 show if I copy the formula form old numbers page it work on the new numbers page

thanks in advance

Ah, that explains it. You're doing it wrong :)

The target currency is required to be a string value. Therefore you need to quote the string => "USD"

Without the quotes, Numbers assumes you're trying to use a function that returns the target currency, and is (helpfully?) suggesting functions that begin with U

Hi Camelot

thanks for your help I did try now and it is working right I did not realise that you need to add the quotations for it to work, as I did even talk to Apple support and not even them where Abel to help me to find the problem or just to let me know that I was using it wrong that I need to use the quotations for it to work. I am very grateful for your help and making me understand what the real problem was not numbers but me not putting the quotations in the formula, the support from apple even did a live view where they can see my screen as I am telling them what I am trying to do and was not able to solve the problem

To be fair, and in Apple Support's defense, it wasn't clear me (or SGIII, apparently) from the original description, nor the original screenshots what the problem was.

It didn't click for me until that last piece where you showed it suggesting functions that begin with "U", and I realized what it was doing.

The Function Browser in Numbers does have an example where it shows the quoted target currency code:

but it is subtle.

The main thing to remember is that the currency code could be the result of another function or cell reference, so Numbers needs you to quote the currency code, just like you would for any other function where you want a direct text value rather than a lookup/calculation.

You're missing important details in your post.

First up, you say "... it will not let me tape in USD as the currency code", but I don't see that. Nothing in the images indicates that you cannot enter 'USD', only that you haven't yet.

Secondly, what is the cell format for B2? Is that a currency cell (I'm not familiar with R xxx,xx as a currency, so this may just be me)

Third, what happens when you try?

If there's an error, Numbers will generally put a warning triangle on the cell and hovering over the cell will give you some idea as to what the problem is. Knowing that error message will go a long way in troubleshooting this.

Hi Camelot I will try to better explain

your first question about me not showing that I can't tape for example USD in the formula bar I will show you in this photo that I will add to this post hope to will give more insight to what the problem is.

The cell format for B2 is the cell is set to currency and then to ZAR (South African rand)

as you can see it will not allow me to type in USD I can only tape the U and then it is giving me the options in the photo after giving that options it will not allow me to tape any more so I can put in the rest that follows after the U

hope that you understand now what the problem is
