Incorrect Apple Pay vendor location and category on iPhone

How can Apple Pay shows wrong vendor, one that is thousands of miles away from the actual vendor and not even in the same category? It seems unsafe to use Apple Pay on my iPhone so I’m deleting my card from Wallet to stay safe.

The charge on the bank statement is the correct vendor. The wallet shows a charge from a Las Vegas parking facility. The actual charge was a cosmetics website. Bizarre and scary that Apple Pay is so messed up.

Sometimes the info displayed in the Wallet register indeed gets a little wonky.

However THAT info displayed in wallet is supplied by your own card issuer (i.e. the bank).

Some card issuers provide a means to “Report Incorrect Merchant Info” by clicking “More” (3 dots) from within wallet.

Using a physical credit or debit card is a FAR riskier proposition than erroneous, post-transaction info being displayed in your payment method’s register.

Recommend you discuss the odd behavior w/ your credit card issuer. They should want to resolve it as much as you do.

I’m not contesting what you’re seeing.

The exact same thing occasionally happens to me … consistently on 3 or 4 specific merchants.

EXACTLY how it happens is unknown to me, but the largely unseen payments processing system — which includes a LOT of entities most have never heard of — is somehow causing erroneous vendor locating data to be displayed.

Mine always “corrects” when I use “Report Incorrect Merchant Info”

But again, the only info displayed within the Wallet “Card” window is based on data sourced from the issuer.

The bank most definitely knows who the merchant is. The issue is the bank does not share information with Apple in regard to merchant or location of the merchant. Apple uses crowd sourced location information and this on rare instances can be influenced by the use of a VPN that misreports the location of the merchant. This could be the merchant’s own VPN or a nearby device using a VPN.
