Ongoing calendar problem after last few IOS updates (current is 18.7).

When I open the calendar app on my iPhone 10R, instead of showing the current months calendar on top and today’s schedule of events below, it goes to event details for an event occurring later today or first event the next day. Then I have to use the back symbol in the upper left corner to see the calendar on top with all events listed below. I rarely open events to view details so it's annoying. There does not seem to be any option in the menu for changing this.
