Unable to sign in to my Google account in Safari on MacBook Air

Despite using my mac for years (with Apple Mail and Safari) to read my google mail and log in to my google account - from this morning apple mail will not connect and safari comes back with error this is not a recognised device. I can, fortunately, still get google mail on my mac through Edison Mail and log in to my Google account via Chrome browser. (still on the same mac that Safari and apple mail will not allow me to do.

It all worked yesterday - nothing has been changed. So what is going on?

Shall I just permanently dump Apple Mail and Safari??

Who did this Apple or Google?

not impressed - Tahoe but no recent update.
