Unable to choose individual songs of my choice when using Smart Playlist

I am using a MacBook Pro 16 (2021), Mac OS: Tahoe (latest version). After the most recent update my Smart Playlists have been behaving strangely: When selecting songs within albums belonging to an artist that has been curated into Smart Playlist, I cannot play the individual song within the album, instead it plays the first song in the album listed by alphabetical order. If I activate "shuffle" and double-click a song, a random song in the album is played - not the selected song.
