onX Offroad app auto-launches on CarPlay and drains iPhone battery

For some reason, my OnX Offroad app (off-road GPS) will automatically open when I connect to CarPlay. When I shut off the vehicle and exit, the app stays launched on my phone and runs in the background draining my battery if I forget to quit out of it. For purposes of the app, I do have the settings to always allow the app to know my location but cannot stop this behavior (auto launching). Cannot seem to figure out how to make this stop. Thougths?
