Is there a way of stopping my AirPods (1) from sounding a tone when the battery is about to go flat? I sometimes sleep with them in and in noise cancelling mode, but when the battery runs down a tone sounds that wakes me up!

You can't turn the sound off completely, but you can turn it down so it hopefully doesn't wake you up.
First, connect your iPhone to your AirPods - just put them in your ears, and go to:
Settings > Accessibility > AirPods > at the bottom, Tone Volume. Turn it down as far as you can.
